Accessorizing Your E-reader

Dress Up, Light Up, and Protect Your E-Reader

Whether you're in the early stages of e-reader joy or you're already a dedicated user, there are plenty of reasons to add some accessories to your e-reading life.

You've invested in an e-reader (or, lucky you, received one as a gift) so, now you just have to download some books and go, right? Not so fast. Think back to grade school days when you covered your shiny new textbooks to protect them; when you decorated your notebook to show off your style; and when you hid under the covers with a flashlight just to get in a little more reading time. It's time to relive that reading excitement. (Though, luckily, you get to choose the reading list these days.) Whether you favor the Kindle, Nook, or Sony Reader, your e-reader accessories await. Some fun and functional accessories worth considering…

Shed light on your subject. Electronic device or not, e-readers remain close cousins of printed books when it comes to their need for a lighting boost. The best readers employ E-ink which, thankfully, can't be paired with backlighting, a major factor in modern tech eyestrain. But it also means that you need to shed a little light on your subject. The issues you face when reading printed material--low lights in hotel rooms, glare from windows, the evils of the hard-to-adjust light over your airplane seat, and more--remain. To make the most of the e-reading experience, use a spring-loaded clip-on or a tension-mounted cuff light developed just for e-readers. The ideal e-reader light should:
  • have a snug-fitting--but shallow--clip or cuff that doesn't spill over onto the reading field. Clip lights stay in place with a traditional spring-loaded grip. The Rechargeable Arc Light's patent-pending design features interchangeable tension cuffs that clamp snug onto the edge of most e-readers.
  • be rechargeable or have a long battery life.
  • offer an easy-to-adjust light you can position for a glare-free reading experience.
  • store easily.

Keep your e-reader safe between uses and while traveling. Even the sturdiest electronic devices have their natural enemies: pens in handbags, short drops, or, yes, pets that haven't been quite trained out of biting behaviors. So, a case. When your e-reader isn't in your hands, it should be under a protective wrap. Don't choose one based on good looks alone--though, of course, there's much to be said for a stylish exterior. Choose a case that holds the e-reader snug and covers the device from tip to toe.
Store your e-reader accessories with ease. Only a gear case provides all-in-one storage for your e-reader accessories. With compartments designed to hold a reading light, AC adapter, ear buds, an extra battery, and a power cord, the only thing you'll leave behind are... now where is my… confusion.
